Oxford City Council
To support the Council’s objective to build a world-class city for everyone, Oxford City Council is investing in new facilities that will benefits local communities, residents and businesses.
Oxford City Council owns the 38-40 George Street site and will maintain ownership throughout and after the proposed regeneration.
The proposal also includes social value commitments through the construction and lease term, including Oxford Safe Places scheme, apprenticeships for Oxford youngsters and paying all staff at least the Oxford Living Wage, including to those working at the hotel.

Staycity Group
Staycity Group will be the ‘head tenant’ of the site. Staycity is an award-winning, Dublin-based company, which started with just one aparthotel in 2004 and has grown to become one of Europe’s leading aparthotel operators with an estate of nearly 6,000 apartments across 32 locations.
‘Wilde’ is Staycity’s premium brand which takes its influence from playwright Oscar Wilde with playful, quirky touches throughout. Wilde already operate in Edinburgh, London, Paris, Manchester and Berlin, with further properties under construction in Cambridge, Lisbon and Porto in Portugal.
Staycity’s aparthotels have a 24-hour reception and most have a café selling drinks, snacks and breakfasts as well as facilities such as a gym, laundry and guest lounge.

Makespace Oxford
Makespace Oxford will be the ‘sub tenant’ of the community space. Makespace Oxford is a locally rooted non-profit that provides affordable, community-led work, meeting, events and organising spaces across Oxfordshire. They revive and reanimate underused buildings into places that nurture connection and support between organisations with a commitment to positive cultural, social and environmental impact.
In the last five years, Makespace Oxford has supported over 150 organisations into affordable space and reanimated 30 buildings across Oxfordshire, including multi-resident work and community hubs in Wantage, Didcot, Abingdon and Oxford city centre.
Makespace’s approach is to respond to local needs, listening to groups, and making spaces that are welcoming, accessible and affordable to access.
Makespace has engaged a Community Advisory Board to support the consultation and design process for this project.
